Assessment Skills

The Assessment Skills series helps movement teachers develop and apply necessary intake, assessment and critical-thinking skills to maximize program outcomes. Alignment is a guiding principle in Pilates.  As such, it is essential for Pilates teachers to develop a keen eye and a profound understanding of postural alignment and variances to assess how intervention, if any, can help to achieve goals. This is a 2 part series.

 

 

 

Part 1 will cover:

  1. Intake & Interviewing skills
  2. Assessment of the Head, Neck, Spine and Pelvis

The Polestar Function Movement Outcome Measure (FMOM) allows students to develop skills in static and dynamic postural assessment. This elaborate screening tool highlights key anatomical landmarks to assessing symmetries and asymmetries. The course will specifically examine how Pilates exercises can influence asymmetries of the head, neck, trunk and pelvis.

Students will refine their interpretation skills in order to design safe and effective exercise programs or refer clients to the appropriate care provider.

This course will also cover the legal and professional requirements for a teacher to secure before initiating a program with a new client in a studio or a gym. Students will learn the most effective techniques for interviewing clients to gather medical, health and fitness information.

Objectives. Students will:
  1. Be able to implement a formal intake procedure in their studio or gym
  2. Learn effective interviewing skills to gather important information
  3. Be able to apply meaning to the information gathered Be able to use this information to design a program
  4. Understand appropriate procedures for referring to other healthcare providers
  5. Become familiar with legal and professional responsibilities pertaining to privacy, scope of practice and ethics when interviewing clients
  6. Use the Polestar Pilates Functional Movement Outcome Measure (FMOM) to assess alignment of the head, neck, trunk and pelvis
  7. Identify how asymmetries in alignment can affect movement efficiency in daily activities
  8. Apply Pilates exercises to improve alignment as it pertains to functional activities
Duration: 4 hour Online prior to onsite, followed by 16 hours onsite instruction (2 days)
Prerequisites
  1. Minimum of one year experience teaching Pilates, yoga or other movement discipline 
  2. Equivalent of one year of Anatomy/Physiology 
  3. Desire to implement professional and ethical practice into Pilates training

 


 

 

Part 2 will cover:

  1. Assessment of the Lower and Upper Extremities 
  2. Qualitative Movement Analysis

This course will enhance effective skills in static and dynamic postural assessment with a focus on structural alignment in functional activities, such as squatting, walking, rolling, and reaching. Students will implement Polestar's Postural Assessment to identify key anatomical landmarks, assess symmetries and asymmetries, and examine how Pilates exercises can be of influence.

This course will also facilitate the practitioner's discovery of what really makes a Pilates teacher unique. Pilates principles provide a unique way to measure quality of movement. Applying qualitative assessment skills and video observation will allow the student to gain an enhanced eye for assessing not only Pilates movement but all movement. Developing critical thinking enables teachers to maximize the benefit to their clients
.

Objectives. Students will:
  1. Use the Polestar Postural Assessment to identify basic asymmetries as they pertain to alignment of the head, neck, trunk and pelvis, and upper and lower extremities
  2. Identify how asymmetries in alignment can affect movement efficiency in daily activities
  3. Apply Pilates exercises to improve alignment as it pertains to functional activities
  4. Understand the evolution of Pilates principles
  5. Be able to practice observation skills of principles in functional and Pilates movement sequences
  6. Be able to identify corrections to facilitate improved quality, efficiency and balance of movement sequences
  7. Learn to assess correct Pilates exercises within scope of professional practice
